What is CD Duplication? CD DUPLICATION is pretty much the same as burning a CD on your desktop computer. A CD duplicator extracts data from the master disc and writes it to a blank disc. If you have your album duplicated in a CD manufacturing company, CD Duplication facilities duplicate hundreds at a time on towers that are linked together. Each tower contains several CD/DVD trays so that many copies can be created simultaneously. Okay. So what’s the difference between CD replication and CD Duplication? Plenty. Is there a minimum order requirement? For CD Replication, most CD Manufacturing Companies have a minimum order requirement of 1,000 units. For CD Duplication, some companies have a minimum order requirement of 500 units. CD duplication is recommended when you need to produce 1-1000 discs. CD replication is recommended when you need to produce 1000 or more.

DVD Authoring is the process of linking together all the menus and components of a DVD. Typically this involves laying out multiple encoded audio/video tracks, generation of sub-titles, menu pages, text and picture gallery or other interactive functionality. At EHA Duplication, with our in house design for both menus and packaging and Motion Graphics, DVD projects can be authored and delivered professionally in a way that allows for ease of use.

Perhaps you require a disc with complex interactivity, moving menus, slideshows, video, audio, images, logos, menus, subtitles, chapters, links, text and graphics. In order to understand DVD duplication and its advantages you need to be aware of the terminology and be able to distinguish between DVD duplication and DVD replication. DVD Duplication is the process of duplicating data onto an existing pre-made disc (also known as “burning”). These discs, known as a DVD-R (short for Digital Versatile Disc Recordable), are loaded into burners where the information is extracted through digital means from the master source. Data is then etched onto recordable DVD-R media using a small laser found in drive burners or duplicator machines. The information is verified and the machine either accepts or rejects the copied version. After verification the disc moves onto the printing stage (if printing is required). This is where ink jet or thermal printers (using graphic files known as “artwork”) print onto the upper surface of each new CD-R or DVD-R. This process is convenient to use (creating a quick lead time) and less expensive than replication due to the minimal setup costs. If a small number of discs are required, usually less than 1000 units, duplication is the preferred process.

Replication (also known as “pressing”) is used when mass quantities of a disc need to be made. It is a more professional manufacturing process where raw materials run through large disc-moulding machines that produce the basic DVD. Firstly, glass masters are created from the client supplied originals, the data is physically stamped or pressed into the other blank discs (then coated and protected with polycarbonate plastic). Most of these processes are fully automated with replication (only re-writing your information once onto the glass master) and the cost per unit is cheaper when orders are above one thousand units. A draw back of replication is that it has a longer lead time and can have a turnaround of two weeks or more.

Understanding the difference between replication and duplication allows you to choose the correct process based on your needs. The fundamental difference to keep in mind is cost-effectiveness with regards to quantity and your required turnaround. In terms of the finished product, there is no difference in quality or consistency between a replicated and a duplicated disc. Generally, DVD technology is moving at a very fast pace and there is an entire new generation of optical discs (SL 4.7GB, DL 8.5GB and DS 9.4GB). Until recently video editing was only possible with the help of expensive equipment and a substantial amount of training. During the traditional “non-linear” editing days Quadruplex videotape was edited by visualising the recorded track with Ferro fluid and physically cutting the film with a razor blade or guillotine cutter and splicing it with tape. Nowadays, modern non-linear editing systems use video which is digitally captured onto a hard drive from an analogue or digital video source. Nevertheless, despite the end of “linear” editing and introduction of these “non linear” editing systems, video editing still works with the same basic principles of motion picture film editing.

With advancements in computers and technology, video editing is a continually changing environment, fuelled by the rapid development of new hardware and software. Computer video editing software, also known as Non Linear Editing (NLE) consists of application software which handles the entire process of editing video sequences. Using software such as Sony Vegas, Apple’s Final Cut Pro and Adobe’s Premiere, footage is first ingested and recorded natively into the appropriate codec and stored on the computer (this stage is called “capturing”). The footage is then logged, i.e. the editor makes note of the scene, shot number, take number and any additional information. It is then arranged in folders (“bins”), which is where appropriate clips (if they are part of the same scene) are grouped together. Once this stage is completed the editor moves on to the actual cutting of the footage.

NLE software is typically based on a timeline interface where clips are dragged onto a video track and laid out in sequence. They offer a range of tools for trimming, splicing, cutting and arranging clips across the timeline. As digital NLE systems have improved there are now features for colour manipulation, title animation and visual effects, as well as tools for mixing audio. After the Clips have been arranged on the timeline, music tracks and titles added and effects created, the final sequence is “rendered” into a finished video. The video is then distributed in a variety of ways such as DVD, Blue-ray, web streaming (QuickTime h.264, flv) or even mobile devices (such as iPod’s, Blackberry’s).

Skilful editing can make a vital contribution to a video’s impact. The way you interrelate shots not only affects their visual flow but directly influences how your viewer reacts to what they are seeing, i.e. interpretation. Editing is an extremely important part of the production process – poor editing can leave the viewer confused, whereas proficient editing creates interest, tension or build up excitement and this is essential in holding the audience’s interest and communicating your message.
